Decade, a ten-year
survey of Sarah Greene Reed’s digital collage work will open at the Beeville
Art Museum on Saturday, January 21, 2012.
The Austin-based artist, a proponent of “more is more,” creates large,
colorful, multi-layered collages, featuring scanned photos, fabric swatches,
bottle caps, zippers, tiaras, plastic food, and wire.
Tracy
Saucier, Director of the Beeville museum, has been following Reed’s work for
several years, and says, “We’ve
wanted to show Sarah’s work for quite some time, and are thrilled to host her
ten-year retrospective.”
To
create each of her pieces, Reed scans the objects—often things she has found--
and photographs, and then edits the color and composition of each layer on her
computer.
“I’ve always
collected things, and consider my collages personal landscapes developed from a
catalogue of images I’ve created over the years,” she stated.
With
a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, MFA studies in Photoshop computer
programming at the University of Houston, and a graduate certificate in
American Arts from Sotheby’s in New York, Reed developed a diverse artistic
background that eventually led to her digital work. “When I started working digitally, I had a lightening-bolt
moment, when I realized it all made sense—it’s the ultimate combination of
everything I’ve worked towards,” stated the artist.
Sarah
Greene Reed has exhibited her work at national galleries and institutions,
including Moody Gallery in Houston, Texas; D Berman Gallery in Austin, Texas;
Lewis Art Gallery, Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi; and the National
Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Reed’s work is also included in the
permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Morris Museum of
Art, Augusta, Georgia; and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans,
Louisiana. Most recently, Reed has
branched out into illustration, teaming up with author Hynden Walch on a
children’s book entitled, Ben and Boo:
Two Dogs on Mars with Banana Pie.
